What a quote should show in Australia

  • Your business name, ABN and contact details, and the customer's name and contact details. business.gov.au
  • A clear description of the work, with each cost on its own line and the total, including GST if you charge it. business.gov.au
  • Payment terms and your preferred payment method, the start and finish dates, and space for the customer to sign and date. business.gov.au
  • A quote date, a quote number and an expiry date. Without an expiry date you may have to honour a price that now loses you money. business.qld.gov.au
  • Whether the price includes travel, materials, labour, and call-out or weekend rates. consumer.vic.gov.au

In New Zealand

  • Time, labour, materials including fixtures and fittings, subcontractor costs, extras like consent fees, GST, and your terms, especially payment terms. business.govt.nz
  • Quotes and estimates should include GST, and if you charge for quoting, say so before you quote. comcom.govt.nz
  • If you quote a specific product, supply that product or get the customer's agreement before swapping it. comcom.govt.nz

When the job is building work

For residential building work, a quote may not be enough above a set price. Check whether your job counts as building work where you are.

  • Queensland: a domestic building contract over $3,300 must be in writing, dated and signed by everyone, or it may not be enforceable. qbcc.qld.gov.au
  • New South Wales: residential building work over $5,000 including GST needs a written contract, and you give the homeowner the Consumer Building Guide. nsw.gov.au
  • Victoria: domestic building work over $10,000 needs a written major domestic building contract, with GST included in the price. consumer.vic.gov.au
  • New Zealand: residential building work of $30,000 or more including GST needs a disclosure statement, a consumer protection checklist and a written contract. business.govt.nz

Tips for electrician quotes

  • Price power points and lights per item, so the customer can add or drop one without a new quote.
  • Say what happens if you find old wiring once the wall is open: you'll quote it before doing it.

Faster in Tradies Line

Wombo, the AI office manager, drafts the quote from your own price list when you type or talk. The customer accepts it online, and it becomes the job and then the invoice.

Questions about electrician quotes

What should an electrician quote include?

Each part of the job on its own line: call-out or site visit, labour, switchboard or safety switch work, power points, lights and switches, cable and conduit, fittings and materials, testing and compliance paperwork, rubbish removal. Then your business name, ABN and contact details, the customer's details, the total with GST if you charge it, payment terms and an expiry date. Source: business.gov.au, business.qld.gov.au.

How do I make an electrician quote easy to say yes to?

Price power points and lights per item, so the customer can add or drop one without a new quote. Say what happens if you find old wiring once the wall is open: you'll quote it before doing it. Then follow it up 7 to 14 days after you send it. Source: business.qld.gov.au.

Can I charge the customer for the certificate?

In Victoria, yes. Energy Safe says a registered electrical contractor can charge customers the purchase amount of a Certificate of Electrical Safety and a fee for handling it, so put it on its own line. Source: energysafe.vic.gov.au.
